Turks & Caicos Club

Turks & Caicos Club is located on world famous Grace Bay in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Island in the British West Indies. The island of Providenciales (Provo to the locals) is a flat, dry island with little vegetation. What it does have is some of the best beaches you will ever see in your life. Grace Bay is a five mile unbelievable stretch of powdery white sand and shimmering turquoise water. Turks & Caicos Club is located at the west end of Grace Bay, where there are fewer crowds and fewer of the larger resorts. Provo is a great place to go if you love the beach and Turks & Caicos Club is a great place to go if you love a quiet, smaller, friendly feel of a boutique beach resort.

We feel Turks & Caicos Club is a cross between a boutique hotel and a luxury condo that gave us the feel of a luxurious bed and breakfast. We stayed in a one bedroom oceanfront room that had spectacular views of Grace Bay. We highly recommend the oceanfront rooms (there are a few pool view rooms, but it is definitely worth the extra money for the oceanfront). The service was awesome and we were treated like we were one of the family. Now if you are expecting the feel of a larger, 5 star resort, this is not what you will get at Turks & Caicos Club. There is not a 24 hour lobby (I guess this is an issue to some people) and the service is not what some would call formal. For example, we didn't seem to have drink service on the beach, no big deal; I went to the bar by the pool (very close to the beach as the resort is small and intimate). Once we ordered the drink they asked if we were at the beach and they said they would bring it out. Then the rest of the stay we had great service at the beach. We found the vibe and feel of the resort to be laid-back and inviting. It was like we were staying at our own private villa. No crowds, just friendly faces that recognized us. Turks & Caicos Club provides what we like to call "friendly luxury", a sanctuary that offers peace and tranquility from the hectic world.

Here's our lowdown on the Turks & Caicos Club

- Our Favorites -

BEACH - Turks & Caicos Club is located on amazing Grace Bay. What we love about this beach and resort is that it does not feel like a big, overstated resort. What you get is the intimate, boutique feel. There were always lounge chairs available (this is a huge plus for us) with a beach attendant to get you set up. There is not typical "beach drink service", but once we ordered a drink, the staff was checking on us regularly. The water right in front of the beach is great for swimming. Also, there is good snorkeling about 100 yards up the beach. Although there are new resorts in the area, you still get plenty of beach and plenty of privacy. Turks and Caicos Club is so small and intimate you will feel like you have the beach all to yourself.

SECLUSION - Beach ChairsWhen we travel, we love a quiet, secluded beachfront resort that allows us the opportunity to completely unwind. Turks & Caicos Club is a smaller resort that allows you to enjoy the beach and sun and not have to fight the crowds. The pool rarely had more than a couple other guests. At the beach, many times we were the only ones enjoying the sun and sand. But if there are other folks at the beach, there is still plenty of room between chairs that allow you all the space you need. If you want a secluded, luxury feel, Turks and Caicos Club is a great place to unwind in peace and tranquility.

ROOM - Turks & Caicos Club Guest RoomThe rooms at Turks & Caicos Club were very large and comfortable. Our one bedroom had a well appointed, full kitchen which can be very convenient if you want to eat in. We also found the wash/dryer very convenient and a nice touch. The layout was open and spacious. One of the best things about the room was the huge balcony overlooking Grace Bay. It was very nice to sit out and enjoy the spectacular views but still get a little relief from the hot sun. The rooms are nicely appointed with everything you would need, even if you wanted to do a little cooking. The bed was very comfortable and we had a view of the ocean ... from our bed! One downside for us was the bathroom. The bathroom was well appointed with lavish European bath amenities, but the bathroom itself was a little small. Also, it did not have a soaker tub which is a negative for me. But it was nice, just not as luxurious as what some may expect.

SERVICE - Now some folks may not think the service was up to "luxury" standards. But when we booked this resort, we were doing it for the seclusion and the beach. We knew this was a smaller, boutique hotel and we expected the service to be welcoming and friendly, not extravagant. We received great beach and pool service during our stay. Check in was smooth and efficient and whenever we needed anything from the staff, we received prompt service. We got twice daily housekeeping which was a nice touch; we always had ample towels which is something I like. At the bar one night they were closing but made our drinks (and an extra one) and essentially locked up the alcohol but left the bar open for us. They said don't worry; just leave when we were ready. This is an example of the type of friendly, family service you can expect. We loved our time at the Turks & Caicos Club.

DON'T MISS :
Da Conch Shack
- One of the things you must do when you stay on Provo is to visit Da Conch Shack for some conch and rum punch. You can take a cab or rent a car as we did (the rental car was arranged through the resort and we were picked up and dropped off and the service was very good) and go and check out Da Conch Shack. It is small, local and very cool. We had a great time, eating, drinking and just hanging out. We were able to go down to the beach and see the guys cracking the conch right on the beach. If you want a place that has a lot of local flavor, don't miss Da Conch Shack!

- Other Good Stuff -

Pool at Turks & Caicos ClubPool - The pool at Turks & Caicos Club was awesome. It was never crowded, very clean, and very relaxing. The bar is right at the pool if you want a tropical cocktail. It is not an "activity" pool so if you are expecting a "pool scene" ... this is not the place. But if you want to relax, soak up some sensational tropical sun and enjoy the beautiful surroundings, make a point to spend some time at the pool.

Snorkeling - There is a good snorkeling reef just 100 yards up the beach from Turks and Caicos Club. The resort provides snorkeling equipment so you don't have to bring your own. There was a good array of fish and coral and I also saw a few turtles, so overall the experience was great. Having snorkeling so close to the resort is an added bonus for us. I also snorkeled further down to the west off the point you can see from the resort. It was a hike ... about a mile and a half and the snorkeling was ok. If you are like me and you don't mind a walk and like to experience different snorkeling spots, give it a try. But the snorkeling close to the hotel was much better so if you are just looking for some good snorkeling, the closer option is all you will need.

Other Restaurants - We have already mentioned Da Conch Shack, which is a must see. But another place you can't miss for dinner is Magnolia's. The restaurant is located on a hillside, with unbelievable views of the water. We found the food to be excellent. The food, the wine, the views ... it was just an awesome experience and one that you should not miss! Try to dine at sunset as the views are simply amazing.
We also ate at Hemingway's located at the Sands on Grace Bay. The view is spectacular as the restaurant is located right on the beach. The food was good, not 5 star, but still good and the restaurant has a great, fun atmosphere. One of the cool things about Turks and Caicos Island is all the dining options that exist. We named a few places we hit, but there is everything from high end to very casual, inexpensive (relatively) restaurants. Whatever you are looking for you can find on Turks and Caicos.

- And Our Not So Favorite Things -

Spa - The Turks & Caicos Club does not have a spa on property. The resort will arrange in room massages, but I prefer the entire spa experience so I did not opt for a massage. This was not a huge deal in that while I like to go to the spa .... I am more concerned with a beautiful beach and a relaxing resort. If you expect a spa on property at a luxury resort, just be prepared to not have access to an onsite spa.

Bathroom - This is pretty picky, but the bathroom at Turks and Caicos Club is small and does not have a soaker tub. If you are used to and expect your typical "luxury bathroom", you will be disappointed. We did not have a problem with bathroom ... but we knew what to expect. The bathroom had luxurious European bath amenities and was well maintained (housekeeping twice daily was awesome!). We loved the resort so much that the limitations of the bathroom did not bother us at all.

Dining - The food at the resort was average; and not what most people would expect from a luxury resort. Dining isn't that important to us, so it was not a big concern. We had breakfast every morning and it was good. We ate dinner once on property and it was good. The service was excellent and it had a small, boutique hotel feel which was very nice. There are plenty of options on the island to eat, so to us this is not a big deal. But if you are really into food and fine dining, make sure you check things out at the property so you know what you are getting.

Resort Room Prices
When we travel, we always look for the best deal and do not mind traveling during the off season to get the lower prices. In the Caribbean, high season is the December to April time frame; off season is the May/June through November. You will tend to get lower rates during the summer months, but you get more heat, humidity and more potential for rain. So you can save some money traveling in the off season, but remember that the weather might not be optimal. If you love the heat and don't mind a little rain, this may be a good time for you to travel

When we travel to the Caribbean, we usually try to travel early or late in the summer months as we are able to get lower rates and the weather is still fairly good. Traveling in the off season can also save money on flights, so that is just another reason to consider traveling at this time of the year.

Weather in the Turks and Caicos

Providenciales - known as "Provo" to the locals is an island that covers 38 miles and is the most developed of the Turks and Caicos Islands. Located 575 miles south of Miami and only 40 miles southeast of the Bahamas, Provo is closer to the US than many of the islands of the Caribbean. Provo is a largely flat island that is very dry and has little vegetation. What Provo does have is amazing white sand beaches and warm temperatures year round. Turks and Caicos Club is located on west end of Grace Bay beach, a five mile stretch of powdery white sand. There are many resorts on Grace Bay, but we got a much more secluded feel at the west end of the beach. Everything was a short cab ride (or a long walk) away, so we felt like we were getting the best of both worlds staying at Turks & Caicos Club.

On Providenciales, you get beautiful tropical weather year round. There is lots of sun that allows you plenty of time to enjoy the beautiful sand and crystal clear water of Grace Bay. In the summer months it can get quite hot, but the trade winds work to keep you cool. Provo does get some of rain (like any Caribbean island) and you should be prepared for unexpected rain showers. The rain does not usually last long, but it's always good to be prepared. When we asked the locals about hurricanes, they told us the mountains of Haiti and the Dominican Republic weaken hurricanes before they hit the Turks and Caicos. They point to the fact that Turks and Caicos Islands have been spared serious hurricanes in recent years. This may be true, but we always keep a watch out for the hurricanes, and so should you. The hurricane season runs from June through November. If you want to lessen the chance of hurricanes, avoid traveling in these months.

Rainfall - Whenever we go on vacation, trying to avoid rain is always high on our list. My husband is especially fanatical about this. Like all Caribbean islands you are going to get some rain on Provo. Provo receives about 26 inches per year, a little below average for the Caribbean. But no one can predict the rain, so you may get some rain on your vacation. If you do get rain, the best way to deal with it is to go with the flow. And remember that Caribbean sunshine is usually not far away!

Chart of Temperatures in Providenciales

Temperature - The Turks and Caicos has beautiful, tropical weather with lots of sunshine throughout the year. The water is warm all year round, ranging from the 70's (°F) in the winter to the 80's (°F) during the summer. Make sure you wear waterproof sunscreen at all times to protect you from the tropical sun.
From November to May you can expect average temperatures in the 80°F to 85° range. As you would expect, the average temperatures (as well as the humidity) increase fairly significantly in the June-October time frame and you can expect average temperatures in the 85°F to 90°F range. In late summer (September and October) you can get temperatures of 90°F and higher! To help out from the heat, there's usually a constant breeze that helps cool things off, but remember that during the summer it can get hot, so avoid these times if the heat is a bother to you.
If you have to travel during the high season ("winter" months), it may cost a little more, but getting some beautiful tropical weather during the winter months back home may well be worth it.

Before you go travel to Providenciales in the Turks and Caicos, or anywhere in the Caribbean, it is always wise to keep a watch on the weather.
