Turtle Bay Resort

Turtle Bay Resort is a 443 room oceanfront property located on Oahu's magnificent North Shore. Featuring two championship golf courses, tennis facilities, hiking and mountain biking trails and a surfing school, Turtle Bay offers an exciting mix of activities for the outdoor enthusiast. Once your outdoor activities are complete, take time to enjoy the resorts two pools, beautiful spa facilities or soak up some sun at the beach.

Turtle Bay is located on the North Shore of Oahu, approximately one hour's drive from Honolulu. Away from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki and the other resorts on Oahu, the North Shore is a beautiful shoreline known for big waves, historic Haleiwa town, spectacular sunsets and world-class surfing at locations such as Banzi Pipeline and Waimea Bay. The North Shore has a small town feel and unspoiled beauty that is a joy to experience. Turtle Bay is the only luxury resort on the North Shore and is the perfect base to explore this part of Oahu. To experience true Hawaii in all its natural beauty, Turtle Bay and the North Shore are the perfect combination.

Here's our lowdown on the Turtle Bay Resort

GOLF - The Turtle Bay Resort features two world class golf courses to choose from on your vacation. The Fazio course is more open and the more forgiving of the two courses, while the Palmer course is a true championship course that will test even the finest golfers in the world. Both courses provide beautiful scenery and a great challenge. Make sure you plan enough time to play both of these spectacular courses.

The Palmer Course is the flagship of Turtle Bay golf and a truly exceptional course. When I played the course it was in immaculate condition. It is important that folks understand this is a stern examination of your golf game. A beast of a course, the Palmer is long, tight and difficult. You get it all here; tree-lined fairways, wetlands, lakes and amazing views of the coastline on the 17th hole. This diversity is one of the things that make this such a special course. Make sure you bring your "A" game as the magnificent Palmer course will test all aspects of your game.

While the Fazio Course is the more open and forgiving course of the two, this doesn't mean it is any less of an experience. The Fazio Course was in amazing shape when I played and features views of the coastline from several holes. If you are looking for a relaxing course that has all the beauty and scenery of Hawaii, be sure to give the Fazio course a try.

Seclusion - Turtle Bay is a unique resort on the island of Oahu in that it is situated on the secluded North Shore. Located away from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki, Turtle Bay gave us a country feel that combines effortlessly with the luxury beachfront property. Plenty of outdoor "nature" activities are located at right at the resort. We could hike, play tennis, ride horses and play golf without ever leaving the resort. Meandering down the North Shore provides some of the most famous beaches and surf spots on the planet. While only 45 minutes from Honolulu, we felt like we were in our own, quiet world. If you want both the luxury of a beachfront resort but also the natural beauty of Hawaii, Turtle Bay is an extraordinary resort that gives you the best of both worlds.

DON'T MISS :
Exploring the North Shore
- Turtle Bay is the only luxury resort located on Oahu's North Shore and provides the perfect base to explore the surrounding areas. We love sunsets and took the opportunity to view some amazing sunsets both from the resort and magical Sunset Beach. Only 5 minutes drive from the resort are some of the greatest surf spots in the world. We took the short drive to Banzai Pipeline and Waimea Bay and saw some of the finest surfers in the world tackle some of the most famous breaks on the planet. If you want to experience local culture, be sure to visit historic Haleiwa Town. There is shopping, cool lunch trucks (be sure to try the amazing shrimp plates) and famous Matsumoto's for a shave ice. If you are into action sports, there is always hiking, mountain biking or horseback riding at the resort or close by. Whatever your interests, the North Shore provides almost limitless possibilities when it comes to outdoor activities. Our favorite part of staying at Turtle Bay is the beauty and wonder of Oahu's North Shore.

- Other Good Stuff -

Pool at Turtle Bay
Pool overlooking the Bay
Pool at Turtle Bay
Smaller Pool

Pool - One of our favorite activities at Turtle Bay is to relax by the pool and enjoy the North Shore sunshine. There are two pools at Turtle Bay: one designed with unique rock formations and a fun little slide for the kids or the young at heart; and another more traditional pool that gave us more quiet space. Both pools overlook the bay and provide amazing views of the North Shore Hawaiian surf!
The wait service at the pool allowed us to enjoy lunch and an invigorating cocktail, right at our lounge chair. Hang Ten, a cool, open air bar looking out over the water is located poolside and can provide any type of refreshment you are looking for. Tropical sun, amazing views of the North Shore and friendly Aloha service make the pool at Turtle Bay an awesome, relaxing experience!

Dining - Turtle Bay provides a wide variety of dining options ranging from casual beach bars to elegant oceanfront experiences. Palm Terrace provides fresh island breakfasts and amazing ocean views. Hang Ten is located poolside with amazing views of the shoreline and provides casual dining and awesome tropical drinks in a spectacular outdoor setting. The Bay Club provides delicious fare and chilled beverages in a casual lounge environment.
For dinner, Leonardo's offers an authentic Italian dining experience while 21 Degrees North offers the finest contemporary Island cuisine while gazing at breathtaking views of Turtle Bay from the floor-to-ceiling windows.

While these are great options, we really want to highlight our two favorite places at Turtle Bay: Ola and Lei Lei's.

Ola Restaurant
Ola

Ola, located on Bay View Beach is the perfect place for lunch or dinner. The views are amazing as we were directly on the beach with unobstructed vistas of Hawaii's North Shore. Meals are prepared with fresh, local ingredients and have distinctive island tastes. We came for the views, but returned for the wonderful flavors and varieties that are offered at Ola.

Lei Lei's is our hidden gem of dining options at Turtle Bay Resort. Located at the golf course, this might not sound like your first choice for dining, but it should be. Lei Lei's offers breakfast, lunch and dinner, but we really suggest you try this delightful restaurant for dinner. Offering fresh seafood entrees and savory beef, chicken and pork dishes, you are afforded many great choices. We were recommended the ribs and they were amazing. Lei Lei's offers a super casual environment with awesome food. The lobby provides complementary shuttle via golf carts to the restaurant. Just have the waiter give a call when you are ready to return to the resort and you are whisked back to the lobby in no time. Be sure to give Lei Lei's a try when choosing your dining options. You will be glad you did.

Beach - The beach at Turtle Bay is a wide crescent that is perfect for lounging in the sun or snorkeling in the protected bay. There is not the traditional set up and wait service at this beach that you find at other luxury resorts, but the beach has chairs and towels so you can set yourself up without any bother. If you want lunch service, the pool is a good option that still allows you to enjoy the sun. Our favorite part of the Turtle Bay beach experience is the magnificent views of the North Shore. The rugged coastline and beautiful ocean provide the perfect backdrop for a day of relaxation at the beach.

- And Our Not so Favorite Things -

Room at Turtle Bay
Room in Main Building

Room - We stayed in a main building room and the great thing about Turtle Bay is that nearly all guest rooms have ocean views. Our room had a lanai and we enjoying sitting outside and taking in the beauty of the North Shore. While the rooms were good sized and comfortable, we felt as though the rooms in the main building were dated and in need of an upgrade. The bathroom was large but it was showing its age and could use some improvements. The decor was nice and had some Hawaiian flair, but it was still not up to our expectations for a luxury resort.
If you are looking for more luxury, consider the Beach Cottages. These rooms are oceanfront, have hardwood floors and luxury bathrooms with soaker tubs (our room in the main building did not have a soaker tub). We did not choose these rooms because they were more expensive. But if you are looking to ensure a quality, luxury room, we suggest the Beach Cottages.

Wind - The thing we liked least about Turtle Bay was the wind. Now I realize there is nothing the resort can do about this, but we feel it is important for people to understand this. It is not like the wind blows all the time, but you will get more wind on the North Shore of Oahu than in places such as Waikiki. It did not stop me from lying out or enjoying the resort, but we think it is important for folks to be prepared. If the forecast calls for wind, it might be a good idea to do plan outdoor activities as opposed to enjoying the beach or pool. You will most likely get some wind during your stay, but if you are ready and plan around those days, you will have an awesome time at Turtle Bay.

When we travel, we always look for the best deal and do not mind traveling during the off season to get the lower prices. This means you may not get to travel at the optimal times based on Temperatures and Rainfall (see charts below). At Turtle Bay, the rack rates are consistent throughout the year, but during the lower seasons we were able to find very good deals. During the summer months and holiday seasons, we expect to pay more (as is the case for most of Hawaii).

Weather at Turtle Bay on Oahu's North Shore

The North Shore of Hawaii, located on the island of Oahu, is renowned for Big Wave surfing, beautiful sunsets and amazing natural beauty. The weather at Turtle Bay is typical tropical weather ... that is to say mild and beautiful year round. The weather on Oahu is diverse; it can be cooler and wet in the mountains and warm, sunny and dry at the beach. Many times we would see a forecast of cloudy or partly cloudy; this is because at some point in the day, you are probably going to get some clouds as this is common for tropical climates. This doesn't necessarily mean rain and if you do get some rain it usually doesn't last very long. Since Turtle Bay is on the windward side of the island, they tend to get slightly more rain, but not enough to be of concern to us.
One thing to keep in mind is that Turtle Bay can get some wind. The north side of the island gets more wind and we feel this is something people should be prepared for. While we did have more wind at Turtle Bay than other places on Oahu, it was not anything that caused us major concern. But do be prepared for a little wind on some days and make sure that your have backup plans if you have activities that may be affected by the wind.

We have been to Oahu and the North Shore many times and rarely have we had trouble with the weather. We have gone in early December and the weather is usually very nice. Any rain is usually just showers and many times we would be back out on the beach in an hour or so. We have always found the weather in Oahu to be great. If you go in the winter months, just realize you have a greater chance for rain, but remember, the sun is usually not far behind.

Rainfall - Whenever we go on vacation, trying to avoid rain is always high on our list. My husband is especially fanatical about this. In Hawaii, you get the most rain in the winter months from November to March. But even in the wet months, the rain does not usually last very long. Also, there are many micro climates on Oahu; you can have rain in one area and dry weather in another. Turtle Bay is on the windward side of the island that gets slightly more rain than the windward side of the island where Waikiki and Honolulu are located. If you really want to avoid the chance of rain, the summer months offer the lowest rainfall. It can cost more to travel during the high season summer months, but if you really want to avoid rain, this might be a good option for you.

Temperature - The chart at the right shows the average temperatures for Turtle Bay. As you would expect the average temperatures (as well as the humidity) increase fairly significantly in the June-October time frame. The trade winds that blow from the northeast provide some relief from the heat, but it can still get fairly hot in the summer. During the winter months, it can get a little cooler in the evening. It's probably a good idea to bring a sweater or light jacket. Otherwise, sit back and be prepared to enjoy the magnificent Hawaiian weather. Don't forget your sunscreen.

Before you go to the North Shore of Oahu, or anywhere in the Hawaiian Islands, it is always wise to keep a watch on the weather.

Hurricanes are not common for the Hawaiian Islands. Still, it is always good to keep watch on the weather before you leave for your tropical vacation.
