Pink Sands Resort

Pink Sands Resort ... Why settle for white sand when you can have pink? Pink beaches are found in several places in the Caribbean, but nowhere more famously or elegantly than on Harbour Island. The pink color comes from tiny creatures called Foraminifera that live beneath reefs, on the sea floor and underneath rocks. Their shells are broken up by the surf into the pink colored sand that is washed up on beach. The aptly-named Pink Sand Beach stretches most of the island's three-mile eastern shore, where sunrises are spectacular and an offshore coral reef tempers the surf. On Harbour Island, beachfront development is mostly exclusive boutique hotels and private estates, so the beach (and island itself) are is crowded at all. We felt as if the Pink Sand Beach was our own private Bahamian sanctuary

Pink Sands Resort has a chic vibe that you feel as soon as you enter the resort. From the Balinese lobby, to the Caribbean cool accommodations, to the seaside Blue Bar, you will feel the special atmosphere only to be found at Pink Sands Resort. The resort is located directly on the world famous Pink Sand Beach and you will feel like you have the entire beach to yourself. The 25 cottages are situated among the resort's 20 acres of tropical gardens giving you a feeling of seclusion and tranquility. When we walked around the resort we rarely saw anyone and when we went to the beach, we literally had the beach to ourselves. There is plenty to do and see on Harbour Island, but when you return to Pink Sands Resort, you feel like you are returning to a relaxing paradise.

Here's our lowdown on the Pink Sands Resort

- Our Favorites -

BEACH - The best part about Pink Sands Resort has to be the world famous Pink Sand beach. At Pink Sands Resort, you really do have the beach to yourself. You will feel like this is your own personal beach. With only 2 small resorts and few homes, there are not a lot of folks on the beach. You can walk for miles and see no one. The resort provides lounges to enjoy the amazing views and beautiful weather. If you are looking for a tropical cocktail or a snack, the magnificent Blue Bar is right up the stairs. The Pink Sands beach offers some of the most amazing views we have ever seen. If you are looking for your own beach with a fantastic resort, Pink Sands Resort is the place for you.

SECLUSION - Beach Chair and UmbrellaWhen we stayed at the Pink Sands Resort, we got a complete sense of seclusion and luxury. The resort is so small that many times we felt as if we were the only one at the resort. It is easy to get lost among the lush gardens and breathtaking beach and feel like you are completely isolated from the world. That is probably one of the reasons celebrities many times choose Pink Sands Resort to get away from it all. Luxury and seclusion make Pink Sands our favorite getaway in the Bahamas!

Blue Bar
The magnificent Blue Bar

BAR - Pink Sands Resort has a more formal bar in the restaurant and a more casual one in the Blue Bar which overlooks the Pink Sand beach. One of our favorite things to do is have a snack or a drink at the Blue Bar and just stare the blue water and pink sand beach. The food was good and the tropical drinks were excellent. We highly recommend the Blue Bar for a Caribbean cocktail to help you unwind and to begin to soak up the Caribbean beach vibe.

Local culture at its Best!!

ISLAND - One of the things we loved most about staying at the Pink Sands Resort was getting to enjoy Harbour Island. Known to the locals as Briland, Harbour Island is a great example of a small Caribbean Island that maintains a terrific, Caribbean-cool vibe. You can rent golf carts (there are no car rentals) and explore the island in comfort, walk the famous Pink Sand beach or just lay back and chill out in Bahamian style. Have a burger at Ma Ruby's, Jimmy Buffet's inspiration for "Cheeseburger in Paradise", if you are to believe the legend. At night go out and enjoy a cocktail at Rock House which is an eclectic, upscale resort located in town by the marina. Or if you are more adventurous, you can check out Vic-Hum Club. Some refer to it as a dive; Vic-Hum club is mostly local hang out that is a great place to soak up some local culture ... as well as some of Vic-Hum's famous Rum Punch. We just loved cruising around Harbour Island and soaking it all up. Once you get a taste of Harbour Island, you will be hooked like we are.

DON'T MISS :
Renting Golf Carts to get around Harbour Island
- O.K. I know ... some people will tell you how much they dislike all the golf carts on the island and how touristy it is. But I had a BLAST driving around in my own personal cart. The golf carts are a great way to get around and we recommend that you rent one as soon as you get to Pink Sands and keep it the entire time. There was just something way cool about using golf carts to get around town. Made it easy to get some dinner, go grab some goods from Arthur's Bakery (a great local hang out) or go out and explore the island. We just felt like we had so much freedom, we could go where we wanted, when we wanted. The golf carts are LOTS OF FUN, so order one up early and get out there and explore Briland.

- Other Good Stuff -

Cottage at Pink Sands Resort Room/Cottage - The cottages at Pink Sands Resort are large and have a cool, Caribbean feel to them. The bathrooms were large and well appointed, but they did not have a deep soaker tub which was a disappointment for me. The room had a patio with teak furniture, but we did not use it much due to heat and humidity. The cottages had nice high ceilings which gave the room a good feel. Also, the air- conditioning was awesome, really cooled the place down and kept it cool. The cottages are very attractive and quiet as there are few rooms in close proximity.

Vic Hum Club
Vic Hum Club - Local Legend

Nightlife - A great thing about Harbour Island is there are some neat little nightspots if you want to have a cocktail after dinner. No flashy discos are anything like that. Just some nice places to have a drink and meet the local folks. Vic Hum Club is a local hang out where you really get to meet the locals. We went to the Rock House and it was fun. Good martini's and we met a lot of the marina crowd. Went and had a few drinks a Valentine's on the marina. Not really nightlife, just a place to enjoy a quiet drink ... which is fine with us. For sunset, we went to the Harbour Lounge and had drinks. It was a great place on the bayside, perfect for watching the sunset as well as the people! Didn't stay late, but the sunset was to die for ... and the tropical drinks were pretty good too!

Pool - The pool at the resort was small but very nice. The pool was definitely not a focal point of the resort, which was fine with us as the Pink Sand beach was so gorgeous we wanted to spend every chance we could there. If you are a big pool fan, make sure you check out the pool facilities at Pink Sands Resort to see if it stands up to your expectations.

- And Our Not So Favorite Things -

Price - The Pink Sands Resort is expensive. That is what happens when you have a luxury resort on one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. The food and drink is pricey, but we are talking about luxury resorts, so it's pretty common for world class resorts. The great thing about Harbour Island is there are plenty of options to eat and have a few tropical cocktails. The places in Harbour Island, outside the resort, are usually more reasonable. So if you want to save a little money, there are plenty of options for you to choose from. Just jump in your golf cart and away you go.

Service - We have to admit that the service was not quite up to the standard we expected. The service by the beach attendant was spotty; he was not there when we went to the beach. Even though it was not busy, it's unacceptable to not have a beach attendant at all times for this caliber of resort. The service in the restaurants was good, but was still a little off in our book. Look, we understand island time and quite frankly don't have a problem if the service is a little more laid back due to the local culture. So that is not the problem. The service was good; we just expected more from such a world class resort.
One note is that we suggest you call the resort directly to confirm you reservation. We reserved and confirmed on-line and when we arrived they had no record of us. Thankfully they had rooms, but it might be best to check with them directly.

Spa - The problem with the spa was ... they didn't have one. This was disappointing because I love a good spa treatment. Massage treatments can be arranged through the hotel, but for me it is not the same as having a spa on location. If you are a spa junkie like me, just be aware that there is not an on property spa. But the stunning beauty of the Pink Sand beach made up for the lack of a spa ... so I can't complain.

When we travel, we always look for the best deal and do not mind traveling during the off season to get the lower prices. Off season for Pink Sands are the summer months. You will get more heat, humidity and rain during this time, but you can also save some money which is attractive for us.

Note: we were told that the resort shuts down for entire month of September. The folks at the resort said that it was just too hot and humid and everyone just took time off. Something to remember if you are looking to travel at that time of the year. When we travel to the Caribbean, we usually try to travel early or late in the summer months as you can get the lower rates and the weather is still fairly good.

Weather on Harbour Island in the Bahamas

Harbour Island - known as Briland to the locals, is approximately 3.5 miles long and only 1.5 miles wide and located just off the tip of Eleuthera in the Out Islands of The Bahamas. Harbour Island is famous for its Pink Sand Beach that runs three miles along the eastern side of the island. The Spectacular Pink Sand beach is protected by an outlying coral reef that makes for calm, beautiful turquoise waters. Harbour Island is a relatively flat, dry island with some low rounded hills and with lots of what we call island scrub bushes. You won't see mountains, waterfalls or rivers on Harbour Island, but what you will see is perhaps the most beautiful beach anywhere in the world.

On Harbour Island, you get wonderful tropical weather year round. There is lots of sunshine to be soaked up on the Pink Sand beach. In the summer months it can get quite hot, but there are usually sea breezes to cool you down. Harbour island is in the Caribbean, so be prepared for unexpected rain storms, but they don't usually last long. Also, you need to keep a watch out for the hurricanes that occasionally hit. The hurricane season runs from June through November. If you want to lessen the chance of hurricanes, avoid traveling in these months.

Rainfall - Whenever we go on vacation, trying to avoid rain is always high on our list. My husband is especially fanatical about this. Like all Caribbean islands, Harbour Island is going to get some rain. Harbour Island receives about 50 inches per year, around average for the Caribbean. Like most Caribbean islands, Harbour Island sees most of their rain in May-October (see chart to the right). If you want to avoid the chance of rain, December through March would be a good time to go. You will usually pay more for rooms during this time, but you get less rain and cooler days. If avoiding the rain is a priority, look into traveling at these times. In the winter months, it gets a little chilly at night, so you might want to bring a sweater or light jacket.

Temperature - As you would expect the average temperatures (as well as the humidity) increase fairly significantly in the June-October time frame. Of course the upside is that the summer is the low season and you can get better deals. It may cost a little more, but getting some beautiful tropical weather during the winter months back home may be well worth it.

Before you go to Harbour Island, The Bahamas, or anywhere in the Caribbean, it is always wise to keep a watch on the weather.
